This Time of Year at Fingerlakes Honey Company: April 2024 Beesness Update

Welcome, "All Things Fingerlakes Honey Company" Enthusiasts!

Here's your monthly update to let you in on what's been going on with our beesness in April of 2024. Now grab your favorite tea, with a spoonful of our honey, of course (See below for a new item that might just make your tea even more beelicious...if that is even possible), sit in your over-stuffed chair, and prepare to be enchanted by the workings of our spring apiary..😋

Bees This Time of Year at Fingerlakes Honey Company

Spring has definitely sprung at Fingerlakes Honey Company. Our bees are extremely active on warm, sunny days and continue to eagerly venture out in search of flowers with pollen and nectar. We've got lots of dandelions, apple blossoms, and tree pollen, as well as other spring flowers, blooming for our pollinating friends. Maybe you are participating in No Mow May- if so, the bees thank you.

On a side note, we noticed our favorite pollinating bird, the hummingbird, is back up in the Fingerlakes for the season. (Make sure to put out some sugar water nectar and plant pollinating flowers for them as well. )

Tom's Beesyness

During this last month, Tom was busy as a bee finishing up preparing for swarm season. If you haven't read our post about swarms and swarm trapping, you can find it here. Then the Swarm Trap Season started on May 3rd. Tom and our son, Caleb, spent the day putting up the traps in various locations. We are so thankful to our son and also the people who participate in our Swarm Trap Exchange Program. We love when people help our fuzzy friends- the honey bees, (not the one they saw in the picture below. 😉 )

Tom started putting honey supers (hive boxes just for honey we sell) on the top a few select hives because the bees are booming. (Maybe we can discuss hive anatomy in next week's blog post.) He has also been beesy building new hives for the swarms we will hopefully catch. These new hives will be placed on local land that has been offered to us to use for just this purpose. Now that's helping the bees and us too. And so begins the busiest time of the year for our honey beesness.

Stacie's Beesyness

Stacie has been beesy herself this past month. She helped to create the labels for our new infused honey products- lemon and cinnamon! Thank you to all the taste-testers who helped us formulate the best flavors. All our infused honey is made from all-natural, organic ingredients- our 100% raw honey that's been flavored with dried ingredients like herbs, spices, fruits, etc. It's made by letting these ingredients soak in the honey, giving it a unique taste. You can use it to add a special twist to drinks, desserts, or even savory dishes. These also make beelicious additions to your morning tea, spread on toasted bread, or used in your favorite recipe. If you'd like to bee notified when new flavors are available, please join our mailing list or email us. If you'd like to suggest a new flavor, leave us a comment below.

Another project Stacie rolled out is our Honey Bee Gift Boxes. You choose the size of your box, your honey, and your card design to put in your box, and we add some honey dippers. This makes a beautiful gift that can bee enjoyed even after the honey is gobbled up- in anyone's price range. It's an easy way to sweeten someone's day. With Mother's Day this weekend, you still have time to remain her favorite child. Speaking of Mother's Day, a huge thank you to Stacie's mom, Deb, for the inspiration for these gift boxes. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms and like-a-moms that are reading. We love you!

Finally Stacie has made a new design for our merch store. Isn't is bee-utiful?! More to come soon we hope. You can find them in our merch shop- here, along with our other great designs. We have our merch products hosted on cafe press, so that we don't have to deal with the enormous inventory, but wouldn't that be a great goal to get to some day? This, as well as our other designs, are on clothing for women, men, teens, kids, and babies, as well as many other products for your home and office. Check them out! She also plans on adding them on our paper items.

The Near Future Beesness Plans

In the near future, we will bee placing more supers on our hives to collect the bee-licious spring honey we bottle. We will also bee checking our swarm traps to see if we caught any honey bee swarms. We will definitely keep you updated. Tom will also soon bee doing his second cut out and rescue of a hive in someone's building. He is looking forward to learning even more this time.

That's a Wrap

We hope you've enjoyed this glimpse into our lives in April at Fingerlakes Honey Company. Even though it's a beesy time here at the apiary, we love this time of year!!! Hopefully you are able to get out in this beeutiful weather, sit in the relaxing sunshine, listen to the birds, and watch the honey bees do their magic. We are so excited for the 2024 honey season! We hope you are as well.

Thanks for reading.

Until next time- Stay Sweet!

Our Beekeepers, Tom and Stacie, are co-owners of Fingerlakes Honey Company located in the bee-utiful Fingerlakes region of New York State. When they are not tending to all things bees, they enjoy spending time with their grown children, their dog, and lots of chickens on their homestead. They love learning more about the bees they foster and helping others to learn more about them as well.
